Seafood Restaurant in Christchurch
Welcome
Welcome to The Ship in Distress, once host to Christchurch's shipwrecked smugglers, now, more than 300 years later, and this Cask Marque-accredited charming coastal pub welcomes its patrons with real ale and freshly caught seafood. Full of history, this traditional village pub is like something from a postcard - perfectly situated on the edge of town and within walking distance of the picturesque harbour.
The atmosphere is truly original; there's a friendly buzz which encourages you to feel comfortable and relaxed. A nautical theme runs throughout, with memorabilia covering the walls of the bar adding to its character and warmth. Why not dine alfresco on a warm summer's evening and then wander down to the quay. If not, you can find comfort in the cosy restaurant with a candlelit table and the low hum of the pub bar just metres away. Although separate to the bar, is just as welcoming and exudes unpretentious
The superb ever-changing menu boasts a wonderful selection of fresh fish, lobster and crab caught by local fishermen. Their fine seafood, as well as there is a selection of vegetarian and meat dishes to suit all palates
Owner Maggie Wheeler was determined to uphold the wonderful traditional pub atmosphere when she took over four years ago, and since then has taken the Ship in Distress from strength to strength. The restaurant can cater for private parties and outside there is a covered and heated smoking area. During the summer months, head out to the patio area with your pint and watch the game on the flat-screen television outside.
We feature in the ever popular "Alistair Sawday Guide to Pubs and Inns of England and Wales", a "must have" book for lovers of good pubs and food.
